Snow Bases

So you just finished up your winter warrior and were wondering how to get snow on the base. There are multiple ways to go about this all with slightly different effects.

1. Deco Art Snow Tex
This is a seasonal paint/paste. To apply this to your base, just grab an old paint brush or toothbrush (if using the toothbrush… make sure it is old). You then just stiple the paint onto the base in the spots your looking for snow.

2. Snow flock
A number of companies make railroad flock that is white and usually labeled as snow. To apply this to your base, add thinned white glue to your base where you want the snow, dip the base into the flock and shake off. If it isn’t think enough, after letting the glue dry, apply more glue over it and dip again till desired amount of snow is on the base.

3. Baking soda
The technique I normally use involves white glue and baking soda and just time for the model to sit around.

Start by mixing up equal parts white glue and baking soda. Thinning the glue with some water helps with mixing the baking soda and extends the amount of glue you have. After you have a just slightly thinner than toothpaste mixture, you want to a little, and I mean little, bit of blue paint.

Once you have your mixture all up and ready to apply, take an old brush and apply to the spots you want. Exact placement is difficult since the glue will naturally spread out during the sitting step. I have also learned to avoid getting any of it on a finished mini… if you do, be prepared to repair your paint job in that spot.

Once the glue/baking soda mixture is applied, you now drown those spots in baking soda and then walk away. It is better to have put too much baking soda over the glue spot than not enough. Let it sit for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, take an old toothbrush or stiff bristled brush and brush off the extra baking soda.
If you are looking for a more rough snow, add hot water to your glue when you create your baking soda/glue mix.

This technique I picked up from Number 9 over at Drunk Dwarves. Warning: Article linked is work friendly, other spots of Drunk Dwarves are not.

Well, I hope this tutorial is helpful to those wishing to add a touch of winter to their miniatures.
